Vietnam: Formative Assessment Guidelines and Materials

In 2021 The National Foreign Languages Project (NFLP), part of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in Vietnam, engaged Cambridge University Press (Vietnam) to produce overarching guidelines for formative assessment, together with classroom materials for use by teachers at lower (Grades 6-9) and upper (Grades 10-12) secondary levels. Similar guidelines and materials had already been produced by CUP for primary levels. These were reviewed and revised by TransformELT consultant Peter Clements, together with TransformELT’s Alan Pulverness. Extrapolating from the approach established for the primary levels, they went on to develop guidelines and materials for the seven secondary levels.

The programme developed provides extensive support designed to enable teachers to integrate formative assessment in their classroom practice, differentiated for each individual school level. Teachers are provided with detailed guidance on planning assessment and recording assessment findings, as well as a range of practical classroom strategies to collect evidence in short, medium and long teaching and learning cycles.

The project is likely to have a transformative impact on teaching through materials that represent best practice in both continuous and periodic formative assessment, with far-reaching implications for developing reflective approaches by teachers, with greater flexibility and responsiveness to learners
