The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has recently acknowledged the value of formative assessment (assessment for learning) in the teaching of English from Primary Grade 3 to Secondary Grade 12. In a far-sighted and progressive policy, MOET has taken a comprehensive approach to fully integrating formative assessment practices within the national curriculum. Guidelines demonstrating the principles and practice of classroom-based assessment and teacher’s manuals per grade at primary level (Grades 3-5) had already been produced by Cambridge Assessment English when in June 2021, TransformELT was engaged to review and revise the primary materials and to produce further guidelines and graded manuals for years 6-12.

The aims of this project were to develop a series of manuals that can be used by teachers to develop and standardise classroom assessment practices. Each grade- specific manual develops and implements the overarching guidelines and provides specific, level-appropriate approaches for formative assessment for each school grade. The manuals provide teachers with guidance on best practice and example assessment activities, including samples of mid-term and end-of-term tests for each of the two semesters for each grade. The project was managed by Cambridge Assessment English and completed (by Peter Clements and Alan Pulverness) at the end of 2021.
